Troubleshooting:
If after examining the errors below you still cannot find your issue, please email our support department with your issue.

If your extraction fails and you see this error in Acorn or in the log file, it generally indicates that the isolation level was not set.

[DataDirect-Technologies][ODBC PROGRESS driver]Error in row.

Solution:

Open the ODBC Data Source Administrator, as above, and ensure the isolation level is set to READ_UNCOMMITTED

If you have access to Skyward’s Data Source Configuration utility, it can be used to create the Data Source to the Student server:
Check your Skyward installation directory for a program called:
ODBC Data Source Configuration.exe
This may reside in C:\skyward\install.

Discovery Software does not provide support for this program, but you should be able to follow the on-screen prompts with the help of your IT department in order to successfully setup the ODBC Data Source.

Skyward Workstation ODBC Configuration Setup

The connection should be made to the Student Database

The Student ODBC IP is the IP address of the progress server with the student database.

The Student ODBC Port is most likely 12501, but could be anything based on setup of the Database.

Once finished follow the steps in Setting up a Data (ODBC) Connection to ensure the data source has been set up, and to retrieve the DSN name.

Troubleshooting:
There are no specific solutions for problems with this utility.

Informix Driver Installation

To set up an Informix DSN you will first need the following information from your IT department (or request you IT department’s help with this process):

IP address of the Pentamation Host

DNS Hostname of the Pentamation Host

DBPATH of the Host’s Pentamation student database

Informix Server Name on the Host

the Pentamation student database name

a valid Pentamation access ID and password

Next we will install the Informix client and set up the ODBC DSN. This portion of the setup is fairly technical, so if you are unsure of anything please contact your IT department:

1.Install the Informix client. This is a licensed product from Informix that should have been provided as part of your Informix installation. Generally it is available on CD, or as a file distributed on your network.

Place the CD in your CD drive, and explore the CD.

Find the setup.exe program: [CD Drive] \ICONNECT\WIN_NT95\Setup.exe (or similar)

Run this program (double click on it). Follow the steps on screen:

Welcome

Click Next.

Enter Serial # and Key

Click Next.

Start Copying Files

Once the Intaller has Finished, Click Finish.

The Informix Connect Drivers should now be installed

Next we need to do some setup on your computer.

Locate the Hosts file in
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
or
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc
and add this line:

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx DNSHostName

Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP Address of your Pentamation Host, and DNSHostName is the DNS name of your Pentamation Host machine.

Locate the Services file in
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
or
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc
and add this line:

sqlexec 1525/tcp

The Informix Connect install places a SETNET32 utility in the Start/Programs menu. Click the shortcut to run SETNET32 and ensure these parameters are set:

On the Environment tab:

INFORMIXDIR=/c:\Informix/
This is the installation folder of the Informix client.

INFORMIXSERVER=/xsrvr/
This is the name of the Informix server on the host (this may be different if you have a different server name enter it here)
DBPATH=//stubase/schdata/
This is the DBPATH of the Host’s Pentamation student database (again this may be different, if you are having trouble finding this value log on to the server and display the DBPATH this should be the same)

On the Server Information tab:

Informix Server: /xsrvr/
Same as INFORMIXSERVER above.

Host name: /DNSHostName/
Same as DNSHostName that was set in the Hosts file in step 2.

Protocol: sesoctcp

ServiceName: sqlexec

Now Click Make Default Server

On the Host Information tab:

User name: Set with a valid Pentamation ID that has access rights to extract data.

Password: Ask Password at runtime.

Close the SETNET32 utility.

On the System DSN tab, click the Add… button.

From the list of drivers that appears, choose Oracle ODBC Driver (this may be named Oracle in [Oracle Home Name] if you have multiple Oracle installations on your computer – in this case it is important to choose the installation that is used for your SIS).

If you cannot find a suitable Oracle Driver you may need to install one: Oracle Driver Install

Click Finish. The Oracle ODBC Driver Configuration will appear.

For Data Source Name, enter a name for the data source. Remember the name you choose, it is the same name you should enter in the ODBC DSN box in the Extractor. This can be almost anything, typically the name of your SIS will work.

Description This can be left blank, but is best used for reference so others will know what this ODBC is used for.

TNS Service Name This is the name of the listener for the Oracle server. This information is dependent on server set up and may have typical values based on the SIS you are using:

Generally in this format: [server address]:[port]/[Listener]

PowerSchool:
The [server address] is the ipaddress of your PowerSchool server.
The [port] should be: 1521.
The [Listener] is the name of the Oracle Listener: most likely PSProdDB

SASIxp:
The listener for SASIxp could be anything, the default listener is Listener, please contact your Oracle DBA for more information.

SchoolMAX:
Generally you will only need the service name for connecting to SchoolMAX. Consult your SchoolMAX documentation, or your Oracle DBA for more information.

UserID This is the user name used to log onto the Oracle server.

Enable Query Timeout: On the Application tab there is a setting with this label, we suggest unchecking this option when setting up if this ODBC DSN. If checked, long queries (ie section information) may cause the extraction to fail. You may see an error window with this text: [Ora]ORA-01013: user requested cancel of current operation

Once all of this information is entered click the Test Connection button, you will be prompted for the password for the account, click OK

If the entries are correct a Connection successful message will appear, your set is finished, click OK numerous times to exit the Administrator.

Once set up you are ready to move on to the next stage of Set Up

Troubleshooting:
If after examining the error codes below you still cannot find your issue, please email our support department with your issue, and then try this website: Oracle Error Codes. Please be aware that this site is external to the discovery website.

[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-01013: user requested cancel of current operation

Solution:

Open the ODBC Data Source Administrator.

Select the appropriate DSN. Click Configure

Ensure that “Enable Query Timeout” is unchecked

Click OK.

Re-rerun the extraction, this error should not appear now.

This error occurs because the query for the requested information is taking a inordinate amount of time to return, so Oracle cancels the query.

[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12170: TNS: Connect timeout occurred

Possible solutions:

IP address of the TNS Listener may be incorrect

Ensure local machine is connected to the network

Ensure server machine is powered on and connected to the network

[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor

Possible solutions:

IP address is correct (if any) but the Listener name is probably incorrect

Ensure Listener is spelled correctly

Ensure server machine has a listener set up

[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12541: TNS:no listener

Possible solutions:

Oracle administrator will need to ensure that the TNS Listener is running on the server

This website has some good advice: http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_ora_12541_tns_no_listener.htm

Oracle Driver Installation

This article is current only as of the last modified date.
The Pearson documentation, Oracle ODBC Configuration and Client Installation
Guide, contains more detailed information for installing and setting up these drivers.

Note:
This process is somewhat advanced and even advanced users have had some trouble installing Oracle’s drivers. These drivers are supported and distributed by Oracle and Discovery Software has no control over their stability nor the installation procedure of the Instant Client Drivers. Discovery Support can provide some assistance in installing these drivers, but we cannot be responsible for the software contained therein. When installing these drivers you will be required to accept the Oracle Technology Network Development and Distribution License Terms for Instant Client which can be found at: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/popup-license/instant_client_lic.html

Oracle Instant Client software is available via download at:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/winsoft-085727.html
If the link above does not work, oracle has changed the location, just do a search for “instant client basic download”.
Note: An Oracle account is required in order to download the software. The
account is free and does not require PowerSchool license or login information.
From the Oracle Instant Client Downloads page:

Click on: Instant Client for Microsoft Windows (32-bit) (Windows XP, Vista 32 bit)

If you are using Vista (64 bit) or Server 2008 (64 bit) you will still need to choose the 32-bit client.

You may need to log on to the Oracle site at this point.

Accept the user license agreement.

Under Version 10.2.0.4:

Download Instant Client Package – (Basic or Basic Lite)

Download Instant Client Package – ODBC

These two files are zip archives. You will need to extract them to your computer.

Extract them into the same folder: eg. C:\Oracle\InstantClient\

There is a help document in this folder in case you need more help: ODBC_IC_Readme_Win.html.

Add this location to your PATH environment variable:

Start->Settings->Control Panel->System

Advanced Tab.

Environment Variables

Under System Variables find a variable called PATH or Path.

Select it, and click Edit.

In the Variable value add the path of the Instant Client Package to the current value, separated by semi-colons. eg. You may add this string if this was your saved location from step 6 above:

;C:\Oracle\InstantClient\instantclient_10_2

Double click on the odbc_install.exe file in the Instant Client folder.

Your Oracle Drivers should be installed.

If you have trouble with this installation, please consult your Pearson Documentation or
Oracle’s website for more information.
