STI: Set-Up
To begin using the STI (Data Extractor) with Discovery’s Acorn there are a few things you will need to set-up at your school/district before you begin:
- You must set up Acorn on a computer that has network access to the computer that has your STI data.
STI data typically is accessed using a Top Speed Driver or using Pervasive SQL DSN. If you are using Pervasive SQL there is a high probability that you will already have the appropriate Drivers installed and an ODBC DSN ready for use. You can verify this by following the steps below.
To check for an existing ODBC DSN:
- Open the Windows Data Sources (ODBC) control panel:
- From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
- On Windows 2000/XP/Vista, open the Administrative Tools folder.
- Double-click the Data Sources (ODBC) icon.
- On the User DSN or System DSN tab, in the User Data Sources or System Data Sources list, check for an entry that matches your school’s information.
- Note the name of the DSN if you found one, this is the same name that you will enter in the DSN field in the Discovery Data Extractor later.
Creating a new ODBC DSN:
If you do not have an ODBC DSN set up then you will probably need to install the Top Speed Drivers which are included in the Bridge package, instructions can be found here: Top Speed Driver setup
If you have no ODBC DSN entries matching your school, please follow these steps to add an ODBC DSN for Top Speed, or for Pervasive SQL, if you do not know if you have Pervasive SQL please contact your system administrator, or proceed with the Top Speed Driver set up:
For this set up you will need the following information:
- Top Speed Driver
- The location of the STI database, must be accessible from the computer you are installing Acorn on.
- Username and Password for an account that has a minimum of read access to the appropriate views in the STI database.
- Drivers must be installed: Top Speed Driver setup
- Top Speed ODBC Setup: Browse to the Top Speed ODBC page to setup and configure your ODBC connection.
- Pervasive SQL
- Server Name (this is the name or ip address of the STI server)
- Username and Password for the Windows account that has access to this server
- You will need to have the Pervasive SQL drivers installed, if they are not installed, please contact your local system administrator
- Pervasive SQL ODBC Setup: Browse to the Pervasive SQL ODBC page to setup and configure your ODBC connection.
Your Data Source is now set up and ready to be used by Acorn.
